In 2004, the Inter-agency Guiding Principles on Unaccompanied and Separated Children (UASC) established the, at-the-time unique, core principles for working with such children. However, subsequent emergencies have highlighted the need for further technical guidance to support the implementation of these principles and to strengthen capacity building in programming for unaccompanied and separated children.
Therefore, the Unaccompanied and Seperated Children Task Force (UASC TF) is launching the Unaccompanied and Separated Children Initiative with the development of the Field Handbook and Toolkit to meet these needs and strengthen UASC programming. Child Protection practitioners are invited to engage with two resources:
- The Field Handbook: A complementary tool to the still-relevant, guiding principles, providing operational guidance for child protection staff and all other actors involved in prevention and response to family separation in emergencies
- The Toolkit: Highlights key international instruments and guidelines relating to UASC, including sample documents for use in programming
